Spouse Scholarships

Rhonda O’Hara

Rhonda is married to SSgt Claude O’Hara and is receiving a $750 scholarship.  She is currently enrolled at Western Governors University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and her Teacher Certification.  Rhonda also has a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies.  Not only is she going to college, but Rhonda owns her own home daycare business.  She also finds time to volunteer and help out at the Airman Cookie Drive and the Enlisted Spouses Club Bazaar. Rhonda also enjoys studying Kuk Sol Won Martial Arts, reading, golf and scrapbooking in her free time.

 

Jennifer Flagg

Jennifer, wife of Capt James Flagg, is receiving a $750 scholarship. Jennifer is doing Independent and Distant Learning from Louisiana State University. Jennifer only has two classes left to take and then her teaching license will be reinstated.  She has been a first and third grade teacher in Utah and Louisiana. Jennifer has five children that also keep her very busy.  Volunteering as a monthly nursery helper at church, reading, bowling, cooking and working in the flower garden are all things Jennifer enjoys to do.



Senior Scholarships


Katharine Fegley

Katharine, daughter of Major General and Mrs. Reynes, is receiving a $750 scholarship.  Katharine is a senior at Peninsula Catholic High School where she maintain a 4.1 GPA and is Vice President of the Saint Vincent DePaul Chapter of the National Honor Society.  Her academic activities include Honors in Journalism, Honors in Honors Literature, World History, French II and III and Honors in Honors Algebra.  Katharine is a Peer Mentor and Retreat Leader.  She is also the Caption Editor of the high school yearbook this year. She is also a member of the Varsity tennis and swimming team.  Katharine will be attending The Catholic University of America this fall where she will engage in a career that advances peace and understanding among all people.

 

Kathryn Rew

Kathryn, daughter of Lt. Gen and Mrs. Rew, is receiving a $1000 scholarship.  She is currently a senior at Kettle Run High School where she maintains a 3.81 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society.  Kathryn has attended 4 different high schools.  Other academic activities include Army JROTC Platoon Sergeant, dance team member, Spanish honor society president and received the Presidential Physical Fitness Award.  Kathryn will be attending Virginia Tech this fall with plans to major in International Relations, enrolling in AFROTC, maintaining exemplary grades and to participate in intramural sports. Upon graduation she intends to be commissioned as an Air Force officer.

 

Sean Michael Williams

Sean Michael Williams, son of Brig Gen Brett and Lt Col (Ret) Marianne Williams, is receiving a $1000 scholarship.  He is currently a senior at Grafton High School where he maintains a 4.03 GPA.  Sean Michael had attended 3 different high schools.  He is an active member of the Key Club, AFJROTC and an Eagle Scout.  He is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and an active member of the National Honor Society.  Sean Michael plays varsity soccer and golf.  This fall Sean Michael plans on attending the University of Florida where he plans to major in Aerospace Engineering and become commissioned through the AFROTC program, just like his parents.  He hopes to be selected for a pilot slot and fly the F-22, either operationally or in the test world.

 

Rebecca Babski

Rebecca, daughter of Lt. Col (Ret) and Mrs Babski, is receiving a $1000 scholarship.  She is currently a Smithfield High School senior, where she is maintaining a 4.5 GPA. Rebecca will be the Valedictorian for her senior class.  Not only has she excelled in academics, Rebecca has excelled in athletics.  She has been the team captain of the cross country and track and field teams.  In 2009, Rebecca was the Daily Press “First Team” All-star Athlete for Hampton roads.  She will be attending the University of Virginia where her goal is to become a chemistry/biology teacher and if the opportunity is present, move to the next level and study pediatric medicine.  She wants to achieve a B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry.  She also plans on participating in NCAA Women’s Athletics.

 

Clint Yeaman

Clint, son of MSgt (Ret) and Mrs. Yeaman, is receiving a $750 scholarship.  Clint is a Tabb High School senior and maintains a 4.23 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. His academic activities include Highest Academic Honors, Piano Eminence Award, Math Honor Society, All American Scholar, Spanish Honor Society and College Board AP Scholar.  Clint also volunteers at the Riverside Regional Medical Center, the American Red Cross, the Peninsula Rescue Mission and much, much more.  He will be attending the Virginia Commonwealth University where he plans on becoming an oncologist. His life goal is to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people.

 

Kara Kleinhenz

Kara, daughter of SMSgt. (Ret) and Mrs. Kleinhenz, is receiving a $750 scholarship.  Kara is a Tabb High School senior who is maintaining a 4.2 GPA and is the President of the National Honor Society.  She is also in the Math and Spanish Honor Society.  Other academic activities include the executive board historian, students against destructive decisions and is a member of the History Club. She is a mentor student with 160 hours of internship with a second grade teacher and is on the Student Leadership Team which focuses on easing the transition of middle school students to high school.  Kara will be attending James Madison University. 

 

Benjamin Richardson

Benjamin, son of SMSgt. Rhonda Richardson, is receiving a $750 scholarship.  Benjamin is a Kecoughtan High School senior where he maintains a 4.4 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society.  His academic activities include Spanish and Math Honor Society, AP Scholar with Distinction and Outstanding Psychology Student.  He is also the Key Club Parliamentarian, the President of the Model United Nations and the Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta. Benjamin has also lettered in Cross County and Soccer.  In the fall, Benjamin will be attending the University of Virginia where he plans to study international politics or anthropology.

 

Christian Burne

Christian, son of Brig Gen and Mrs. Burne, is receiving a $1250 scholarship.  He is currently a senior at Peninsula Catholic High School where he maintains a 4.7 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society.  Christian is captain of the vasity baseball team, member of the varsity swim team, peer mentor for new incoming students, a senator at the American Legion Virginia Boy’s State and president of Students Against Destructive Decisions.  He also has over 120 volunteer hours over the last four years.  Christian will be attending the University of Scranton this fall.

 

Mandy Bowers

Mandy, daughter of Lt. Col (Ret) Pamela Bowers, is receiving our $1250 Diane O’Malley scholarship award. This award is to honor the memory of Mrs. O’Malley who was the Honorary President of the LOSC.  She believed not only in academic success, but also in volunteering and what it could do for a community.  This award has been given annually since before 1990.  Mandy is a Jamestown High School senior who has earned a 4.34 GPA and has acculmulated over 450 volunteer hours in the last 4 years.  Anything from volunteering at the humane society to being an interpreter at the Wythe House in Colonial Williamsburg. Mandy is also a member of the National Honor Society.  Other academic activities include AP Scholar with Distinction, President’s Volunteer Service Award, Commended National Merit Scholar and Honor Roll every single year. Mandy will be attending Dartmouth College where she will major in international relations with hopes to enter the State Department and work on the civilian side in the battle for peace.

2009 LOSC Scholarship Winners




How much is awarded with these scholarships?

The amounts vary year to year as do the number given.  It all depends on fund raising monies gathered by March.

How may the scholarship be used?

All funds received shall be applied to tuition and/or associated university costs administered by an accredited college or university.  These costs may include books, fees, room or board but may not be used for penalties or disenrollment fees.

There are two types of scholarships available to dependents and spouses of military members stationed at Langley.

1. One is for graduating high school seniors.

2. The other is for spouses who are not members of the Langley OSC. 

Who is eligible to apply for a scholarship?

1. Applicants must be high school graduates or equivalent and plan to attend an accredited college or university during the upcoming academic school year.

2. As of March 15, 2009, in the selection year of 2009-2010, the applicant must be the non-military spouse (or widow/ widower) of one of the following:

a. Active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed at Langley AFB.

b. Active duty reservist of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed at Langley AFB for at least 9 months.

c. Retired or deceased Air Force member residing in the local area.

d. Active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces on a remote assignment from Langley AFB.

e. Active duty Air Force member stationed at the US Joint Forces Command.

3. Applicants accepting service academy appointments, full ROTC, or full college/ university scholarships are not eligible.

4. Applicants are NOT permitted to be an LOSC member.
